(a) +3 m.
(b) -4 m.

Exercise 2.

(a) average velocity = (-9+4)/(5+5) = -0.5 m/s.
     average speed = (9+4)/(5+5) = 1.3 m/s.

(b) average velocity = (-5+8)/(5+5) = +0.3 m/s.
     average speed = (5+8)/(5+5) = 1.3 m/s.

(c) average velocity = (-2+4)/(2+4) = +1/3 m/s.
     average speed = (2+4)/(2+4) = 1 m/s.

(d) average velocity = (-6-3)/(3+3) = -1.5 m/s.
     average speed = (6+3)/(3+3) = 1.5 m/s.



Exercise 3.

(a) [(+8) - (+2)] / 10 = +0.6 m s-2
(b) [(+2) - (+8)] / 10 = -0.6 m s-2
(c) [(-8) - (+2)] / 10 = -1 m s-2
(d) [(+8) - (-2)] / 10 = +1 m s-2
(e) [(-8) - (-2)] / 10 = -0.6 m s-2




Exercise 4.

(a) [(-0.8) - (+1)] / 2 = -0.9 m s-2
(b) [(-1) - (+2)] / 2 = -1.5 m s-2
(c) [(-0.8) - (+1)] / 3 = -0.6 m s-2
(d) [(-0.5) - (+2)] / 0.5 = -5 m s-2
