Electric Field

Hang two small balloons some distance apart. Rub a glass rod on both of them.

The glass rod gains a positive charge. The balloons gain negative charges.

Hold the glass rod between the two balloons, closer to one of them. The glass rod attracts both balloons, but it attracts the nearer balloon more strongly.

Now move the glass rod around - left, right, up, down, front, back. The rod can still attract the balloons.

This shows that the attraction from the positive charge on the rod spreads out over the space around it. In this space, the negative charge on each balloon experiences a force from the charge on the balloon.

This region of space in which an electric charge experiences a force is called an electric field.
